Nicola Atkinson Davidson was in residence at the Schloss (Castle) Almoshof. It is a small, sandstone castle with an atmosospheric ambience in the middle of the 'Knoblauchsland' ( a rural, farming region) just outside the city of Nürnberg.
GREEN DOT/Der Grüne Punkt (PART ONE)
On arriving from Glasgow for the first time I walked the streets
of Almoshof. It was a hot summer night and I noticed these yellow
sacks outside people’s homes. The contents of each sack were
clearly visible and inadvertently exposed to the world. I could
see if they ate meat, kept dogs or had a secret love of chocolate.
It was quite an intimate portrait of the people of Almoshof who,
at that moment, were still strangers to me.
It made me wonder… where do our items go once we place them
into the yellow sacks? I wanted to catch these everyday items in
their journey from usefulness to being recycled and present them
in a new way. I decided to involve 100 people who live in Almoshof,
identifying the main road that passes the Schoss as the place to
hand deliver the invitation to participate. Since I do not speak
a word of German I was aware that it may have created extra tension
in the working process, but not so. With the help of either Veronika
Weindler or Gabriele Wahl of the Schoss, I visited each recipient
and asked for one item from their recycling bag/yellow sacks. The
reaction, as you would expect, ranged from a man giving us an 1940’s
radio (which works) to not those who wouldn’t even talking
to us. In between were these amazing encounters: meeting a woman
who was partly nursing her father with her four other siblings and
who gave us his feeding sack; a woman who devotedly loved her dog
and a man who owned a brush company across the road. In the end
53 people became anonymously involved and 53 items were collected.
I placed the items on cloth bags, the symbol of our support in
preserving our landfill sites of plastic bags. They became transformed
into a classic still life and could perhaps be seen as ‘new’
desirable objects. I have produced, I hope, an intimate portrait
of the lives in the area, they are not such strangers anymore.
We have invited the 53 people of Almoshof who participated to the opening and, as my gift, they will receive their own personal cloth bag adorned with an image of their item.
Der Grüne Punkt - GREEN DOT (1. Teil)
Als ich aus Glasgow ankam, spazierte ich durch die Straßen
von Almoshof. Es war eine warme Sommernacht und auf einmal bemerkte
ich diese gelben Säcke vor jedem Haus. Das Innenleben jedes
Sackes war deutlich zu erkennen und wurde ohne Scheu der Umwelt
präsentiert. Ich konnte sehen, of sie Fleisch aßen, Hunde
besaßen oder eine heimliche Schokoladenvorliebe hatten. Es
war ein ziemlich intimes Bild der Leute von Almoshof, die zu jenem
Zeitpunkt noch Fremde für mich waren.
Das machte mich nachdenklich... Wo kommen unsere Dinge hin, nachdem
wir sie in den Gelben Sack gesteckt hatten? Diese Frage weckte in
mir das Verlangen, diese alltäglichen Gegenstände auf
ihrer „Reise“ vom Nutzlos sein zur Wiederverwertung
abzufangen und sie in einer neuen Art und Weise zu präsentieren.
Ich beschloss, 100 Leuten von der Almoshofer Hauptstraße eine
Einladung zum Mitmachen zu geben. Diese Aktion hätte zusätzliche
Schwierigkeiten im Arbeitsprozess bringen können, weil ich
doch kein Wort Deutsch spreche. Aber so kam es nicht...Mit Hilfe
von Veronika Weindler und Gabriele Wahl vom Schloss Almoshof besuchte
ich die Leute und bat sie um ein Objekt aus ihrem Gelben Sack. Die
Reaktionen reichten, wie Sie sich vielleicht vorstellen können,
von Geschenken wie einem Radio aus den 40er Jahren, bis hin zu Leuten,
die nicht mal mit uns sprechen wollten. Und zwischen all diesen
beeindruckenden Treffen: wir trafen eine Frau, die momentan mit
ihren vier Geschwistern ihren kranken Vater pflegt und die uns einen
Beutel mit künstlicher Nahrung von ihm gab; eine Frau, die
ihren Hund abgöttisch liebte und ein Mann, der eine Bürstenfabrik
gegenüber hatte. Letztendlich wurden 53 Leute aktiv und wir
konnten so 53 Objekte sammeln.
Ich druckte sie auf Stofftaschen, die ein Symbol für unsere
Umweltschutzbemühungen gegen Plastiktüten sind. Die Objekte
wurden in ein klassisches Stillleben verwandelt und sind dadurch
vielleicht zu „begehrten und neuen“ Objekten geworden.
Dies ist meine Hoffnung; ein persönliches Portrait der Anwohner
zu geben und sie nicht länger Fremde sein zu lassen.
Wir haben alle zur Eröffnung eingeladen und als persönliches
Geschenk von mir, werden die 50 Teilnehmenden Anwohner jeder seine
eigene, persönliche Stofftasche mit dem jeweiligen Objekt darauf
bekommen.
HANGERS ON....
(PART TWO)
It was only in my last weeks here that I thought it would be great
idea to involve the people who use the Schoss. All of the activity
at the entrance prompted me to select and borrow coat hangers from
the collection used in the building. I felt that they not only hold
the comings and goings of our outer skin but perhaps even the ghost
of the public as they hang awaiting use.
The time I have spent at Nuremberg has been great and I wish to
thank everyone who has made my stay warm and welcoming.
Erst in den letzten Wochen meines Aufenthaltes dachte ich mir, es wäre doch eine gute Idee, die Leute mit einzubeziehen, die das Schloss benutzen. Ich entschied mich dafür, Kleiderbügel zu leihen, denn sie halten unsere tägliche “äußere Haut” und vielleicht auch den Geist der Öffentlichkeit
Die Zeit in Nürnberg war wunderbar und ich möchte jedem
einzelnen danken, der meinen Aufenthalt so einladend und offenherzig
gemacht hat
