Profile
Having held the post of senior lecturer in Art and
Social Contexts at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, in 1985
he was appointed head of a new department, Environmental Art, at
Glasgow School of Art, becoming Head of Sculpture and Environmental
Art in 1995 from which he retired in 2001. He has taught and given
lectures internationally on public and socio - political art in
Nigeria, France, Germany, Sweden, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
He has been working as teacher and artist since 1959 including, as Town Artist (‘68-78) of Glenrothes, Fife, where he developed the concept of the artist as planner and member of the design teams building the new town. He edited the book of essays, ‘DECADEnt - Public Art - Contentious Term and Contested Practice’, Foulis Press, (‘97) and has contributed to publications and conferences addressing public art and ‘socially engaged practice’
