Laurie Steelink
Artist
Profile
Inspired by circus sideshows freaks, the occult, noir and horror films, punk and goth culture, as well as politics, Steelink creates large-scale works on paper. Juxtaposing humor with horror, and dream with nightmare, her work displays psychic disarray in its expression of fear, disgust, pain, and glory. The spirits of the innocently evil children depicted in horror flicks like The Omen, The Exorcist, and The Children of the Corn are channeled through some of her work, but the overall statement of her oeuvre evokes the lingering nightmare that invades our collective psyche on a daily basis during times of war and unrest, as well as a reminder of the violence and abuse experienced by humanity world wide. Steelink graduated with a BFA at San Francisco Art Institute, and with a MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has exhibited her work both locally and internationally. Her publication, Clowndog has been widely collected by international libraries and deviants. She currently lives and works in Venice, California.
