Playing with the notions of scale, a three-part piece integrates a proposal for the outside wall of the Gallery, a massive external display case and an interior display case in the lobby. The largest work to the scale of the building is not built, but implied using the architectural language of the blueprint a map for the imagination. The display cases are bricked in with decoratively delicate and task-intensive repetitive motifs. Intimacy is brought to public pronouncement and sensuous domesticity to a somewhat impersonal exhibition space.
Material Consequences presented five emerging artists whose different visions were linked by the use of ordinary materials and humble processes of making art. As a whole, the work in the exhibition established a tension between spare, rigorous minimal art and a romantic embrace geared to eccentric form and emotional content.
